And just like that, February is here...
As plantas continuam a crescer, mas estou a ficar inexoravelmente sem espaço e nutrientes... Terei de fazer um esforço para completar o sistema grande o mais rapidamente possível. Três peixes não devem produzir nutrientes para isto tudo.
Os morangueiros estão a crescer a olhos vistos.
(Although there is constant growth, I'm running out of space and will have to finish the larger system ASAP. The growth rate might be limited because of that. Maybe 3 fishes are not enough, nutrient-generation-wise, for all these veggies. At least the strawberries are invading everything...)

Chegou a minha encomenda de mais morangueiros e sementes. Agora é que tenho mesmo de acabar o sistema grande.

Quick Update!
Os nossos amigos continuam vivos e estão a comer, por isso já fiquei descansado. Entretanto, no bercário começaram a aparecer beringelas ou pepinos. Ainda estou para descobrir quais.
(The fish are all alive and came up to feed, so all is well and my mind is at rest. Meanwhile, on the seedling bed, eggplants and/or cucumbers are starting to pop up. I'm not 100% sure which is which.)

Comet strikes!
Hoje lá me enchi de coragem e fui buscar os primeiros peixes para o sistema. Três Red Comets, uma bomba de ar XPTO, um aquecedor de aquário para garantir um mínimo de 18ºC e comida. Não foi fácil encontrar comida SEM extractos animais (de solo) mas lá consegui arranjar um "Nutrafin Max" que cumpre os requisitos.
Aceitam-se sugestões de nomes para os 3 peixes.
(I've finally worked up my nerve to go and get fishes for the system. Ended up buying 3 Red Comet (goldfishes), an air pump and a heater. The trickiest part was finding a feed that didn't contain land-based animal content. But I've found a brand called "Nutrafin Max" that does the trick.
Feel free to send suggestions on what to name the fishes.)

Expansions, baby!
Já lá vão 42 dias desde que se começou este projecto e está mais que provado que resulta. Por isso vamos avançar para um sistema maior. Um membro do clã Mateus Henriques disponibilizou um tanque de àgua IBC, que cortámos em duas partes e que agora vamos pintar, instalar um sifão e desenvolver uma estrutura que os suporte. Entretanto aqui ficam mais umas fotos do estado do sistema.
(The system has more than proved itself after only a mere 42 days, therefore, we're moving onto larger systems. A family member has given me an IBC water tank, so we'll be using that as the new system. No idea how long it will take. We'll have to paint it, secure it, install a syphon and build a supporting structure.)

Leafy greens, leafy greens everywhere!
Voltámos da passagem de ano. Bom 2013 a todos!
Continua tudo na maior. Tirando o pequeno erro de ter deixado uma folha da alface colada a uma pedra, continua tudo com bom aspecto. O alho recuperou da falta de àgua e já enviou um espigão substituto. Os bróculos e as couves continuam a crescer bem, O espinafre está a começar a desenvolver as folhas. A iceberg e os coentros continuam a arrebitar, lenta, mas inevitavelmente.
Outro membro do clã Mateus-Henriques ofereceu um morangueiro para o projecto. O pobre está com aspecto doente, confesso, mas aqui no sistema VAI arrebitar. Senão como-lhe os morangos todos. ...ok, isso vai acontecer independentemente de tudo.
(We're back from the New Year's bash. I hope everyone had a great time. The garden is still looking healthy and everything is growing just fine. Except for a leaf on the lettuce that I've (stupidly, I may add) left sticking to a rock after sprinkling it with some water before leaving for the party, nothing has died. The garlic survived the previous water shortage and the bit that was drying out was already replaced by a new one. The spinach, cabbage and broccoli are looking amazing.
In other news, another clan member has donated a strawberry plant to the project. It is looking slightly ill, but I'm confident we can make it bloom.)
